A Screening Interview is conducted to verify whether or not the candidate holds the required qualifications for a position. This is generally the first step in the interview process and sets the expectations for the rest of the hiring process.

The examples listed below focus on specific skills to be evaluated. They can be changed based on the responses and how you want to assess the candidates.

Question 1: Can you walk me through your resume and highlight how your experiences align with this role?

To Assess: Relevance of experience and communication skills.

Sample Answer: “I’ve spent three years in marketing, focusing on digital campaigns and analytics. In my last role, I managed a project that increased web traffic by 40%. These skills align with your need for someone experienced in data-driven marketing strategies.”

Question 2: What are you looking for in your next job?

To Assess: Alignment with company values and role expectations.

Sample Answer: “I’m seeking a role where I can leverage my project management skills and contribute to large-scale initiatives. I’m also excited about opportunities for growth, which I see in your company’s robust career development programs.”

Question 3: What attracted you to this position and our company?

To Assess: Research skills and genuine interest.

Sample Answer: “I’m impressed by your company’s commitment to sustainability, which aligns with my values. This role allows me to use my supply chain expertise to create efficient and environmentally conscious solutions.”

Question 4: What skills do you bring to the table that make you a good fit for this position?

To Assess: Core competencies and self-awareness.

Sample Answer: “I excel in data analysis and stakeholder management, both of which are essential for this role. For example, I streamlined reporting processes in my last job, reducing turnaround time by 30%.”

Question 5: Do you prefer working independently or as part of a team?

To Assess: Work style compatibility.

Sample Answer: “I enjoy a balance. While I thrive in collaborative environments to brainstorm ideas, I’m also self-motivated to work independently on tasks requiring focus.”

Question 6: When are you available to start if you’re selected for this role?

To Assess: Practical readiness.

Sample Answer: “I can start immediately. If a notice period is required, I’ll need two weeks to transition from my current role professionally.”

Question 7: How would you describe your ideal work environment?

To Assess: Cultural alignment.

Sample Answer: “I thrive in an environment where collaboration and innovation are encouraged. I also value clear communication and organizations that invest in their employees’ professional growth.”

Question 8: Why are you looking to leave your current role?

To Assess: Professional motivations and tact.

Sample Answer: “While I’ve gained valuable experience in my current role, I’m seeking new challenges and opportunities for growth that align with my long-term career goals.”

Question 9: Can you give an example of a challenge you faced in your current role and how you handled it?

To Assess: Problem-solving ability.

Sample Answer: “We faced a delay in a critical project due to vendor issues. I negotiated with the vendor for expedited delivery and restructured timelines to prioritize key deliverables, ensuring the project stayed on track.”

Question 10: What are your salary expectations for this role?

To Assess: Realistic expectations and negotiation skills.

Sample Answer: “Based on my research and the responsibilities of this role, I expect a range of ₹8–10 lakhs annually. However, I’m open to discussing this further based on the total compensation package.”
